The Austrian civil engineer Herbert Mang, emeritus full professor at the Vienna University of Technology and Chaired Prof. at Tongji Univ. Shanghai for many years, has made groundbreaking scientific achievements in the field of computer-aided numerical mechanics. His research activities range from stability investigations of structures, ultimate load determinations of reinforced concrete structures, geotechnical investigations especially in tunneling to process-oriented studies concerning the finite element method and the boundary element method.
Mang has been honored by election to 20 academies, including the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the award of six honorary doctorates from prestigious universities, and the award of a large number of major scientific prizes, most recently in 2020 China’s International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, the highest scientific award for foreign scholars.
